The garden is in

The garden is in and the green is growing! I have killed the evil potato bugs and my plants are dark green and climbing to the sky! The lettuce is soooo close to ready and I saw a tomato on a plant. Yay!

When I was in Cali, I was lucky enough to visit with an awesome fella named Mike. We could have spent hours discussing the climbing values of tomatoes grown the hydroponic way. I saw his lettuce grow and ready in less than 4 weeks. I came home with a craving to create more and figure out how I can use hydroponic on my ranch.

I already have a good recycling program. The chickens and pigs are a perfect garbage can for the weeds, overgrown grass and thinning of my world-acclaimed sunflowers that are slowly taking over the ranch yard.

But alas, tomato arch, yes, that’s right! It’s possible and I am going to experiment. Just need me some Home Depot buckets! LOL.

The flowers and the garden are a great freedom, a time for reflection on how I create all these great “greens” so that the folks that come to our ranch clinic can truly indulge in ranch life, with garden veggies, fresh milk, cream, ice cream, and whip cream from ol’ Maybelle (don’t forget the butter), fresh eggs, homemade pies, lean homegrown pork. The fact that you get to eat it all with us on our deck or at the tiki bar, enjoying the wonderful Wyoming sunset makes my heart warm.

I invite you to start your own garden. It can be as small as a pot of basil in the kitchen window, or maybe you till up a nice chunk of ground and plant rows of goodies! Whatever it is, find that inner gardener and enjoy the small things of summer and eat something you grew yourself!

Until next time, be sure you live life as an adventure. Excited to see what’s around the next bend!
